 What is EMMAUS?

EMMAUS is a group formed by the chaplaincy to support Catholics who have come here to study - especially those who are here for the first time. We hope to make you feel more at home and provide the support you need to encourage your spiritual growth and deepen your faith.

Luke 24: 13-33 tells the story of two friends meeting the risen Jesus as they travel on the road together to Emmaus, inviting him to their home, recognising him in the breaking of bread, and going out to tell others of their encounter.

What is a more common, ordinary gesture than breaking bread? It may be the most human of all human gestures: a gesture of hospitality, friendship, care and the desire to be together. Taking a loaf of bread, blessing it, breaking it and giving it to those seated at the table signifies unity, community and peace.

Many of us are also on a journey, and some of us come from far off places in the Globe. In EMMAUS, we aim to travel together, meeting Jesus in the everyday events of our journey through life.

For those of us staying in Exeter we make each other welcome in our homes and bedsits, recognising Jesus in sharing the Eucharist together, and sharing our faith with everyone around us. For those of us who are away from home, we share our culture and enrich those around us before moving on with warm messages of love and shared experiences.

EMMAUS is therefore about encounter, experience, and being with Jesus.

When Jesus breaks bread, he does the most ordinary as well as the most extraordinary. It is most human as well as the most divine gesture. The great mystery is that this daily and most human gesture is the way we recognize the presence of Christ among us. God becomes most present when we are most human. We hope you will join our EMMAUS group and share this joy of being together with God.

What we do...

The group organizes activities and puts catholic students in the university in contact with the local community both in the university, but also in the wider community in Exeter. By helping students get the best out of their experience, we hope they will take home fond and enduring memories of Exeter.

EMMAUS activities include:

Arranging for international students linkages with families in Exeter (the host family program)

Activities and programs to help international students obtain a 'flavour' of living in the southwest (e.g. outings, bbqs, walks, teas, pub quizzes, etc.)
